The
Art of Arranging Silk Flowers
Emilio Robba shares his secrets for achieving his
innovative designs - always inspired by the natural world. Now everyone
can master the art of brilliant floral displays by discovering how
to sculpt flower stems for optimum naturalism; design arrangements
in three different ways: planted in moss, immersed in the illusion
of water, and fashioned into bouquets; follow nature's patterns
by choosing colors that harmonize; and create lifelike arrangements
by making silk flowers "imperfect". The Art of Arranging Silk Flowers
shows you how to select, arrange, and maintain naturalistic silk
flowers for every taste and every mood. Robba instructs you on how
to choose flowers by color and shape; how to look at the leaves
and stems to determine quality; and where and how arrangements are
best placed. Whether you follow Robba's step-by-step designs for
specific projects or are inspired by the arrangements that appear
throughout the book, you will learn the art and craft of silk flower
arranging. Included is a comprehensive materials section that outlines
all you need to know about tools, containers, and silk flower preservation.

Floral
Design and Arrangement
This book was written to provide a basic instruction
in the techniques of floral design. The author has attempted to describe
the fundamental skills and methods used by florists when creating
modern commercial designs. The beginning floral designer will then
be able to develop these skills further in more advanced design work.
The material is intended for use in introductory floral design courses
at the secondary, vocational-technical school, or college levels.
Professionals and commercial florists will also find this book an
excellent reference. This new edition has undergone considerable reorganization.
New features include a selection of floral arrangements illustrated
in color; floral products and current commercial practices have been
included to assist in the training of the floral design student; selected
chapters have been expanded to include information of concern to floral
designers working in non-traditional flower markets; a set of study
exercises has been included at the end of each chapter as an instructional
aid; and an additional chapter has been added describing the many
career opportunities in the American floral industry. Throughout the
three comprehensive units of the book, readers will be taken from
a discussion on the history, principles, and elements of design, to
the construction methods for creating floral designs and the use of
dry and everlasting flowers, to a detailed description of commercial
florists' designs for all occasions. |

Well-Tended Perennial Garden; Planting and Pruning Techniques

The
Well-Tended Perennial Garden; Planting and Pruning Techniques
Tracy DiSabato-Aust has devoted years
to studying how to plan and care for perennials so that a garden
can be a real showplace with a minimum of maintenance. The first
key to success lies in good site planning and plant selection that
emphasizes each plant's strengths. But what is most important is
learning how and when to prune and shape perennials to produce more
flowers, encourage lush new growth, discourage pests, stagger bloom
times, and maintain vigorous health. Amazingly, this is the first
book that has covered this essential topic in detail, although books
on pruning woody plants abound. Deadheading, pinching, cutting back,
thinning, disbudding, and deadleafing are among the techniques in
the gardener's arsenal that are thoroughly explained and illustrated.
There is also an extensive encyclopedia of important perennial species
and cultivars that clearly explains the pruning and maintenance
needs of each plant. Wonderfully useful appendices offer a month-by-month
planting and maintenance schedule for the typical perennial garden
and lists of plants with specific pruning requirements.

Perennials
for Every Purpose: Choose the Right Plants for Your Conditions, Your
Garden, and Your Taste
From
Library Journal
Canadian garden writer and lecturer Hodgson is true to his book's
title, covering quite a lot of ground in a straightforward, no-nonsense
manner. Preliminary chapters cover the basics such as getting started,
creating a design, and keeping plants healthy. The highlight, however,
is the 14 chapters that profile perennials that can be used in unique
situations (e.g., dry, wet, sunny, shade, easy-care). Each plant profile
includes a photograph, a sidebar listing plant characteristics, and
informative paragraphs detailing good companion plants, problems and
solutions, and the top performers and recommended varieties for each
plant. Other "extras" include a beautiful section of seven garden
designs, a glossary of the meanings of botanical names, plant sources,
and the American Horticultural Society Heat Zone Map. This hefty book
delivers in each aspect and should be a welcome addition to all gardening
collections.--Phillip Oliver, Univ. of North Alabama Lib., Florence
